Quick definitions for terms you’ll run into around the app, in help articles, or in emails from your league.

Nothing to do here — this is background, not a task. Every term below can show up regardless of your role.

Organization — The top-level account running everything: one or more leagues, seasons, registration, a news feed, and (for admins) a shared admin dashboard. Most people only ever interact with one organization — the one running their league.

League — A group of teams playing the same sport under the same rules, inside an organization. An organization can run several leagues at once — different sports, different nights, different skill divisions. Sport-specific settings (lineup rules, the co-ed gender rule, cornhole/pickleball scoring) live on the league.

Season — A defined stretch of time a league plays through — registration, a schedule, standings, and eventually an end. Seasons move through stages (draft, pre-registration, registration, scheduling, published, archived) as an admin advances them.

Division — A sub-group of teams within an organization, usually balanced by skill so games stay competitive. Some organizations sort teams into divisions using a holding pool (below) before generating a schedule.

Free agent — A player who registered for a season without a team, waiting to be placed on one — either by accepting a captain’s draft offer or by an admin assigning them directly.

Buddy pair — Two free agents who’ve asked to be placed on the same team together. Both have to accept an offer before either one joins — if either declines, the pairing offer dies for both.

Holding pool — A temporary league some organizations use during registration when divisions haven’t been decided yet. Free agents and teams register into it, and once registration closes, an admin sorts everyone into the organization’s real leagues before a schedule is built.

Sub — Short for substitute: someone who plays in specific games without being a permanent roster member. A coach can add a sub they already know directly, or pull one from a league-wide sub pool of players who’ve opted in to being found for a given sport and season.

Official — A neutral referee/umpire role, granted per organization and scoped to specific sport(s) by an admin. An official can read an assigned game’s rosters and scoreboard, enter or override its final score, and decline an assignment — but holds no admin access to teams, rosters, or seasons. See Becoming an official.

Forfeit — A game recorded as a loss for a team that didn’t show up or couldn’t field enough players, without a real score being played. Forfeits count as a normal win or loss in the standings but contribute nothing to run/goal differential.

Mercy rule — A common rec softball/kickball convention where a lopsided game is called early once one team is far enough ahead, rather than playing it out. It’s a rule your league plays by on the field, not a League Sage setting — the app doesn’t automatically end a game for you; whoever’s entering the score just records the game as finished at whatever point your league’s mercy rule says to stop.

Waiver — A liability release players agree to as part of registering for a season, when an organization has one set up. It applies at the organization level (the same text for every season and sport that organization runs) and is only shown to people registering themselves — not someone added directly to a roster by a captain.

RSVP — Your response to an upcoming game: Going, Maybe, or Can’t. It feeds the attendance count your coach sees and, once locked in, shapes the lineup. RSVP buttons lock to a read-only chip once the game starts.

  • A term you hit in a league email or another help article and still don’t recognize? It’s very likely defined here.
